What is a Concussion?
Brain injuries do not often show symptoms and without proper athletic trainers or coaches educated in the right ways to diagnose symptoms of a concussion, the danger is just around the corner during any game. Coaches and athletic trainers as well as players and parents should be educated about the proper ways to handle a possible concussion. Remember, when there is any doubt in your mind, keep your child or athlete out of play! There is no possibility of benefiting from playing with a concussion. The ramifications of playing with a concussion could end your career with any secondary concussion.
There are approximately 1 million high school football players in the United States. Of these 1 million players there is a reported 67,000 concussions. The alarming statistic is that there is an estimated same number of concussions that go undiagnosed. Reasons of not reporting these concussions varies from the player not reporting the symptoms, coaches not wanting to sit there star player or even parents wanting their child to play to just being ignorant of the ramifications that concussions can cause. Concussions are found to affect someone’s memory, verbal skills, balance and orientation.
A “G” is a unit equal to the force of gravity. The force that a soccer player experiences while “heading” a soccer ball is 20G. During a collision a low-speed car crash causes an impact of 10G-30G. Then there are football players who have experienced a recorded 289G, nearly 300 times the force of gravity.
Football helmets have been proven very helpful in protecting against skull fractures but they have not been proven helpful against preventing concussions.
A concussion is a brain injury that results from a jolt or a blow to the head or the body that produces a disruption in brain activity. Symptoms of concussions may include physical, emotional, and/or cognitive complaints such as:
ANY PLAYER IN ANY SPORT CAN SUSTAIN A HEAD INJURY WITH EVEN THE VERY BEST HEAD PROTECTION. UNEQUAL PADS CAN NOT PREVENT CONCUSSIONS OR ELIMINATE THE RISK OF SERIOUS HEAD OR NECK INJURIES. Scientists have not reached agreement on how the results of impact absorption tests relate to concussions. No conclusions about a reduction of risk or severity of concussive injury should be drawn from impact absorption tests. Independent third party ISO17025 accredited lab tests of Unequal supplemental head pads and body pads (collectively referred to as “Unequal Products”), showed a reduction of the Severity Index and G-Force in most cases. Test data available upon request. Results may vary depending on: helmet or pad type & style; sport / activity; contact surface; temperature; impact levels; linear & angular forces; helmet or pad manufacturer; and user’s health. No helmet or pad, including Unequal Products, can prevent serious head, brain, body and/or neck injuries including paralysis or death a person might incur while participating in activities, games, or sports. Contact with a person, object, surface, or projectile can result in severe head, body or neck injuries, paralysis or death to You and possible injury to your opponent. This contact may result in concussion- brain injury or severe bodily injury, which no helmet or body pad can prevent. Symptoms include: loss of consciousness or memory, confusion, bruising, redness, dizziness, headache, nausea, pain, soreness, discoloration, numbness or tingling. If You have these symptoms, immediately stop playing and report them to your coach, trainer, and/or parents. Do not play or return to the activity, sport, game, or practice until all symptoms are gone and You have received medical clearance. Ignoring this WARNING may lead to another and more serious or fatal injury. Unequal Products are not bullet proof, bullet resistant, stab resistant, or stab proof. Remember helmets and body pads do have limitations. They are your second line of defense. Obey the Rules and Code of Conduct of your particular sport, game or activity. Being careful and responsible is your first priority. Use common sense and practice safe sports
